Petitgrain

Family: Rutaceae
Genus: Citrus
Species: C. aurantium

Petitgrain is the name of essential oils extracted from the green leaves and twigs of citrus trees. It is a term usually associated with essential oil sourced from the bitter orange tree C. aurantium, but other examples include Petitgrain lemon tree oil and Petitgrain mandarin oil. In the fragrance industry, the term is also widely used to describe the oil’s country of origin e.g. ‘Petitgrain Paraguay’.

The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation. Bitter orange trees yield three distinct essential oils: Petitgrain, Neroli and bitter orange essential oil. While Neroli is sourced from the flowers and bitter orange essential oil from the fruit rind, Petitgrain is distilled from the leaves and twigs of the orange tree, giving it a more woody fragrance. All Petitgrain essential oils have distinct fragrances, imparted by their complex mixture of chemical components.

Petitgrain is a highly versatile essential oil traditionally used in both perfumery and medicine. Its powerful anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties make it a natural remedy for skin conditions like acne and pimples. In aromatherapy, the relaxing and uplifting properties of Petitgrain are used to help reduce fatigue and stress.
