Family: Rutaceae
Genus: Citrus
Species: C. aurantiifolia, C. latifolia
Limes are renowned members of the Citrus family. There are several different species of lime grown for their fruit, as well as many commercial hybrid varieties. Growing on small evergreen trees that thrive in hot climates, lime fruits are typically small, round and green in colour.
Lime essential oil is an extremely useful by-product of the lime juice industry. Cold pressing of the rind allows collection of the oils, whilst the rest of the fruit can be pulped to produce lime juice.
Limes have been used for hundreds of years in ancient medicine and aromatherapy. Lime oil has been found to have several medicinal properties, including being antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and aiding mood improvement.
