Bergamot

Family: Rutaceae
Genus: Citrus
Species: C. bergamia

Bergamot or Bergamot Orange is a small evergreen tree grown primarily in Southern Italy for its fruit. It is usually a hybrid of bitter orange and lemon (C. limon), or bitter orange and lime (C. aurantiifolia).

Although the fruit is considered inedible, the oil from the rind is widely used both in fragrances and as a flavouring. It is probably best known for its use in Eau de Cologne, and for giving Earl Grey tea its signature fragrance and flavour.

Bergamot has been used for hundreds of years in ancient medicine and aromatherapy.  Bergamot oil is known to have several medicinal properties, including antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
