Family: Rosaceae
Genus: Rosa
Species: R. damascena
The genus Rosa contains many different species of rose – but relatively few produce the fine rose fragrance suitable for the perfume industry.
One of the most important species grown for commercial purposes is the Damask rose. In Turkey, the Damask rose has been cultivated for over a hundred years to produce famous Turkish rose oil. Today, Turkey remains a leading producer of Damask rose oil alongside Iran and Bulgaria.
Another important rose cultivar grown for oil is R.centifolia, cultivated mainly in France, Egypt and Morocco. Rose oil is widely used in the perfume and cosmetics industry.
Rose essential oils can be captured by steam distillation of the petals to produce rose essential oil, or by solvent extraction to produce rose concrete and rose absolute. Rose has been used for hundreds of years in ancient medicine and aromatherapy. Studies have found Rose oils to have several medicinal properties, including being antimicrobial and anti-fungal and aiding mood improvement.
